Really enjoyed this! Since leaving my faith community a few years ago to figure out who I am outside of that context, the thing I have missed the most is the sense of community. Knowing so many people, doing activities together, having a shared purpose, being there for each other. You can’t find that just anywhere. And there’s definitely evidence that having a faith (in something) helps people cope better with loss, illness or crisis. Even though I’ve learnt so much about myself since I left, I have suffered as a result of the loss of community. We are so individualised in a secular world.
There are other forms of community of course, but when you’ve been isolated for a while it’s difficult to join in. I do need to make more of an effort, for my own health if nothing else.
Thanks for sharing Katy!
